| Surrounded by three mountain ranges, Grenoble is in
a unique position and offers a cyclist a huge variety of rides. The rolling
mountains of the Chartreuse to the north, the high plateau of the Vercors
to the south-west before the huge imposing climbs of the Alps to the east.
These are the climbs on which the Tour de France is fought every year.
The climb of Alpe d'Huez starts only 50km from the centre of Grenoble.

The following links are broken down into specific areas around Grenoble. Explore the web pages to give you an idea of the countryside before you visit. Each area lists the main climbs that can be found including their start town, the length and the vertical climb. I've included a number of suggested routes and miscellanous information on the area including ride reports and places off the beaten track that are worth exploring. The routes are not specifically planned to be ridden in a day, they are to give you an idea of of how much Grenoble has to offer. I've also included a diary link, so you can see what I have been cycling - July 2000 included riding the Marmotte sportif and a weekend in Barcelonnette cycling over the highest mountain pass in Europe, August 2000 included riding the Megeve Mt Blanc sportif. The Alps around Grenoble are include some of the most famous roads in cycling. The Col de la Croix de Fer, the Col du Galibier and Alpe d'Huez are cycled every year by thousands of cyclists in the Marmott Sportif. 170km and 5,000m of climb finishing with the climb up to the ski resort of Alpe d'Huez. |

South west of Grenoble, the Vercors run as far as the town of Die. The plateau, where the average height of over a thousand metres makes it perfect in the winter for winter sports and perfect in the summer for a cool ride. Amazing gorges, rolling roads through wooded peaks. |

Grenoble's third mountain range and quiet roads that run though a pretty rolling range. The most famous ride taking the rider from Chambery to Grenoble over the three cols of the Granier, Cucheron and the Porte. |

The French Alps have some perfectly situated towns and villages including La Clusaz, Bourg St Maurice and Barcelonnette. These towns have enough around them to make it feasible to spend more than a weekend exploring the roads and countryside. Soon to add Briancon. |
